How to Tell If an AC Capacitor Is Bad?
A bad AC capacitor typically shows as an outdoor unit that hums with no fan movement, a fan that only spins with a push, clicking as the system tries to start, or a unit that starts then trips the breaker. A technician confirms it by testing the capacitor’s microfarad reading against its rated label.

What a bad capacitor sounds like before you touch anything
Many conventional outdoor units run on a dual-run capacitor that supports both the compressor and the fan motor during starting. Some systems add a separate start capacitor for extra torque, a different part with its own rating and failure signs. A weakening capacitor often shows up as:
- A steady hum with the fan blade not moving. The hum is the motor straining to start, and a capacitor that’s lost capacitance is a common reason it can’t get going, though a technician still has to rule out the motor, wiring, and voltage.
- Clicking or clacking as the system repeatedly tries to start and drops out. That can be a contactor, a relay, or an overload cycling; the sound alone doesn’t say which.
A fan blade that only turns with a push confirms the motor lacks starting assist. Never test that with your hand or a stick: a stalled fan and a live capacitor sit inches apart, and you can’t tell which one is dangerous by looking.
A unit that starts, runs briefly, then trips the breaker can fit a similar pattern: a weak capacitor can keep the compressor from reaching full speed, drawing high current while it strains, though a short, a grounded winding, or low voltage can trip a breaker the same way. One reset is a reasonable test; a second means stop, since a breaker that won’t hold points to a serious electrical fault a technician needs to isolate.
What a bad capacitor looks like without opening the panel
On some outdoor unit models, a small vented grille lets you see the capacitor without removing the electrical access panel or touching wiring.
