AC Down in Triple-Digit Heat? Do These Three Things While We’re on the Way
- Ice on the copper lines or the indoor unit? Turn cooling off and set the fan to ON. The coil has to thaw before we can test anything. If it’s still frozen when we get there, we’re standing in your garage for an hour.
- Breaker tripped? Reset it once. If it trips again, leave it off. A breaker that keeps tripping means something is shorted, and every reset after that is more heat in the compressor.
- Close the blinds, turn on the ceiling fans, and put everyone in the coolest room. If anybody gets dizzy or confused, call 911 first, then call us. Stay hydrated.

Most AC systems break due to a handful of issues, and the symptom usually points at the cause. Here’s the typical cost and if it can wait until morning.

Should You Repair or Replace Your AC?
If the unit is under about 12 years old and it’s a capacitor, contactor, or fan motor, fix it. Those are the parts that wear out first in Texas and they don’t cost much to replace.
If it’s 15 or older and the compressor or evaporator coil failed, ask for two quotes in writing, one to repair and one to replace, and look at them side by side. Sometimes the repair is still the right call. Sometimes you’d be spending money to fix a compressor that will need a coil next summer.
If it runs on R-22, plan on a new unit. R-22 hasn’t been made in the U.S. since 2020, and the compressors and coils built for it mostly aren’t either. What’s left is reclaimed gas at a high price, and a system that needed a recharge once has a leak that will need one again. If a shop offers to top off an R-22 system and send you on your way, ask them what it costs when it’s low again next July.
