AC Won’t Turn On or Trips the Breaker
An air conditioner that won’t turn on, or trips the breaker every time it tries to start, is almost never a dead system. It is usually a thermostat, safety-switch, or electrical-component fault a homeowner can pin down in a few minutes, with one exception that calls for professional AC repair. Check the power before you blame the AC
Rule out the simple stuff first, before assuming a failed part.
- Confirm the thermostat is set to COOL, the display is lit, and the set temperature is below the room temperature. Dead batteries or a blank screen look identical to a dead AC.
- Find the breaker for the outdoor condenser and the one for the indoor air handler in your electrical panel. Both need to be in the ON position; a tripped breaker usually sits in a visible middle position, not fully flipped.

A system that gives no response at all, no hum, no click, no fan, usually traces to one of four causes rather than a failed compressor.

- A failed 24-volt transformer stops the low-voltage signal that tells the outdoor unit to run, even though the breaker and disconnect are both fine.
- A tripped condensate safety switch, the float switch mentioned above, shuts the whole system down when the primary drain clogs and water backs up in the pan. Clearing the clogged drain line restores power; forcing the switch does not.
- Dead thermostat batteries or a loose wire at the thermostat base can make the entire system look dead when only the control signal is missing.

AC trips the breaker the instant it starts

AC trips the breaker after running for a while
A different pattern, tripping only after the system has run for several minutes or longer, points to overheating rather than a bad start.
- A compressor running low on refrigerant charge loses the cooling that refrigerant flow normally provides, which can let it overheat and trip on protection; a worn motor bearing works harder than it should and can draw climbing current until the breaker cuts it off.
- Condenser coils caked with dirt, grass clippings, or cottonwood fluff can’t shed heat into already-hot outdoor air, so the compressor overheats and trips as a protective response.
- An aging or undersized breaker can also simply be at the end of its own life, tripping at loads it used to handle without issue.
Burning smell or an electrical odor from the AC
