Is It Time to Replace Your AC?
Replacement starts making sense when the system is 15 or older and the compressor or coil goes, when you’re paying for a refrigerant recharge every summer, or when the unit runs fine but still can’t hold temperature through August.

What’s changed for 2026: R-410A refrigerant production is stepping down and recharge prices have climbed steeply since January 2025, so an older system that leaks is getting more expensive to keep alive each summer. Treat that as a budget consideration. There’s no deadline anywhere in the rules that forces you to replace a working unit.

Choosing the Right System in 2026
Shopping for a new AC in 2026, you’ll hear two numbers a lot. Every new split system in Texas has to be at least 14.3 SEER2 (13.8 for larger units), and anything built since January 2025 runs R-454B refrigerant instead of R-410A.
14.3 is just the legal floor. Our units run so many hours a summer that stepping up to a 16+ SEER2 unit usually pays for itself on the electric bill, and your quote will show that comparison. And if a bidder starts talking about EER2 ratings, that rule only exists in Arizona and the desert Southwest. They’re reading an out-of-state script.
On refrigerant: new equipment ships with R-454B, but the EPA still allows installing leftover new R-410A units until stock runs out (that rule took effect July 2026). Both are fine. We install and service both, and your quote will say which one you’re getting.
What a New AC Costs
A full system replacement in the McKinney area commonly reaches five figures once equipment, labor, permit, and commissioning are counted, and equipment pricing has been volatile through 2025 and 2026. Your written quote itemizes every piece so you can see exactly where the money goes.
Four things move the price: the tonnage your home actually needs, the efficiency tier you pick, whether the indoor unit (furnace or air handler) gets replaced at the same time, and the shape your ductwork is in. Which salesperson you got isn’t one of them, because there isn’t one.
Rebates and financing in 2026
The federal 25C tax credit is gone: it expired for any system installed after December 31, 2025, so ignore any ad still promising it. What’s real in 2026: Oncor’s Take A Load Off, Texas program discounts qualifying high-efficiency systems through Oncor-approved participating contractors (amounts vary by system, funds are first-come first-served through roughly November), plus manufacturer promotions we’ll flag in your quote.
Spreading it out: financing up to 18 months interest-free is available with approved credit.
