8 signs replacement is the smarter call
Four equipment signs that point to replacing an AC:

How the R-410A transition shifts the math for older units
Since January 1, 2025, new residential AC and heat pump equipment must use a refrigerant with a global warming potential under 700, so new systems ship with R-454B (some lines use R-32) instead of R-410A. That date was a manufacturing cutoff, not a ban. As of 2026 an existing R-410A system remains legal to run, service, and recharge, and a federal rule finalized in May 2026 lets contractors keep installing pre-2025 R-410A units until inventory runs out. Nobody is required to replace anything.

No refrigerant rule, efficiency standard, or expired credit forces a replacement in 2026, and a contractor who waves a deadline at you has told you something useful about the contractor.
